Confidence, focus, and self-defense for children ages 5 and up.

Every parent wants their child to be confident, focused, and capable of standing up for themselves. Hung Ga Kung Fu develops all three, not through motivational posters on the wall, but through the actual work of training.
At Syracuse Kung Fu, children train under Sifu Sharif Anael-Bey, one of Central New York's most experienced martial arts instructors. The curriculum is traditional, demanding where it should be, and tailored to meet each child where they are. We accept students from age 5.
Confidence built on real skill is different from confidence built on praise. When a child learns that their body is capable, that they can break a stance, hold a form, and spar without freezing, that confidence transfers to every other area of their life. We've seen it happen in children who walked in barely able to make eye contact.
Hung Ga requires precise attention. You can't be thinking about something else when you're doing it. For children who struggle with focus in school, the concentration demanded by martial arts training often produces noticeable improvements in their academic performance within months.
We don't just teach kids to fight back. We teach them awareness, confidence, de-escalation, and, when necessary, how to protect themselves. A child who carries themselves with genuine confidence is far less likely to be targeted in the first place.
Hung Ga builds strength, flexibility, balance, and coordination simultaneously. Children who train regularly develop a physical capability and body awareness that sports alone don't provide.
The Hung Ga tradition holds that the Martial Community is One Family, Mo Lum Yat Ga. Children learn to show respect to their instructor and training partners, to encourage each other, and to understand that their progress is connected to the progress of those around them.
"Syracuse Kung Fu is a great school for people who have never tried martial arts, and people with years of experience. Sifu Bey is not only a master of his art, but a master teacher as well: he knows how to communicate the most subtle and challenging ideas and movements to his students."
"I am so grateful to have found this school and the people in it. I came to the school for a 1st visit going on 3 years ago and have never left."
Sifu Bey understands that no two students are alike. His teaching is adapted to the individual, their pace of learning, their physical starting point, their personality. Children are not rushed through curriculum to earn the next rank. They are taught to do things correctly, and then to do them better.
The environment is disciplined but warm. Children are held to standards and celebrated when they meet them. It is, in the words of one longtime student, a place where acceptance is real.
